They were being greedy little bastards, wanting all of the money the relics were worth, rather than just the 50/50 reward; hell, I'd be happy with the 50/50 reward(s) from reporting relics I find, if I ever found any, it'd be a nice supplement to my income, as a bonus on top of the satisfaction of helping to uncover historical relics!
Not sure about this. Have things changed - or do we just want to imagine they have? Amber was found on a c. 11K BC site near me. Its not possible to say how much it was prized by the owner. As best I recall Neolithic Brittany stone carvings seem to show a violent iconoclastic turn around 4,000 BC or so Actually what I find thought provoking is the exaggerated value that was put on (supposed) holy relics by medieval clerics, and a kind of exaggerated value put on anything at all dug up - by some modern academics. Is there some sort of parallel? As I recall the TV Digging for Britain thing starts with "stone after wonderful stone" Hey fellas. They are stones.
They weren't going to get a 50/50 reward split as they were trespassing, and did not have permission to hunt and dig up relics on that land.
