When he was first elected, he was already 73, and Adenauer was 87 when Erhard followed him as a chancellor. Schumacher spent about ten years of his life in nazi prisons and concentration camps - and that did certain not just affect his "looks". He was the leader of the SPD and fought many decisions that Adenauer's CDU made, but Schumacher also opposed any plans to merge the Social Democrats and the Communists. In that regard he contributed to the fundaments of the country too.</p><p> </p><p>The Adenauer coin was the first one in that series (minted 1969-87), then came Theodor Heuss (first president, minted 1970-87), then Schumacher (1979-93), Erhard (1988-96*), Strauß (1990-96*) and Willy Brandt (first SPD chancellor, minted 1994-96*).
