Ruben, Just because there are "No scratches" doesn't mean it is UNC. I believe that it would grade AU53 at tops...with my grade as XF45/AU50. The hair shows wear, and also the stars may show some wear. It is interesting that the hair would have such nice detail (on most of it), and the stars show little or no detail at all. Speedy
Basically every dark brown spot/area you see in the picture is the result of the coin rubbing against tissue paper for all those years. That is the wear.
As Doug said---all of the dark area is wear....I've marked the parts that jump out at me. The green arrows point to where the wear shows the most IMHO, and where there is notable flatness. I would say that most of this wear came from moving around in the jewelry box, and not from circulation....but wear is wear. Speedy
We can all go around and around on this. But, without seeing the coin in-hand, I don't think it's possible to determine with certainty, if we are seeing wear VS. toning and/or staining.
No scratches pushes the grade through the roof if it is in MS condition. There is only an issue of the tone. Here is my best Morgan, graded ANACS MS 64 Now, that fellows photo is a SCAN. Your saying that were the hair splits into the finest detailed strands along there ear, just were your pointing it is worn, is worn? I'll take this coiin at XF price x2. no problem. Here is his coin again:
True Mark---but on a forum about all we can work with is pic's.... Would you mind posting what mint that Morgan dollar is from?? It looks like it is from the "O" mint---known for weak strikes.... Speedy
Interesting coin and comments by all. I see both sides as far as details on the coin goes. In this case I will go with AU53 mainly because I do not like the color. Just my opinion - which can be wrong.
There is not much of a debate because what knowledge I have isn't a hill of beans compared to Speedy and Doug knows. Anything you might read as a challenge is only a challendge for them to more clearly explain. Ruben
On my coin? I thought you we talking to the thread owner. http://www2.mrbrklyn.com/morgan_coins.html The 96 has no mint mark the 97 also has no mark which confuses me because I thought I had an O somewhere.
On the reverse also, there appears to be wear on the eagle's breast, edges of the wings, and head. My eyes could be plain out decieving me though, but that is what I see. Phoenix
WOW--that got me! Normally when you see the lack of hair detail above the ear, as your has, it is an O mint coin. I know that it isn't always but most of the time. The P mint seemed to be very good with strong strikes and most of the time all of the detail was there. Interesting to say the least..... Speedy
I am sorry that i am so late in chiming in on this coin! I agree with high grade assessments but how high it will grade, I really couldn't tell you! After a quick dip in the liquid Silver Jewelry Cleaner sold at WalMart, a good rinse in Distilled Water and patted dry in a soft towel, would tell another story. It sure couldn't hurt the coin considering the atrocious toning that it has. Although the high points on the coin look to be worn due to what appears to be friction from the tissue paper that it was stored in so many, many years, they may not be anything more than darker toning due to the chemicals being released from the paper as it began to break down. I have attached edited pics of the Obverse and Reverse that have been converted to the Greyscale which somewhat negates the illusion given by the toning. Frank
