I'm trying to fill that same album myself... think of it as basically a type set from the 19th century to the present (it skips coins only made in the 18th century, most of which are rare in any kind of decent condition). There's an optional gold page you can add to it to that has types for gold coins from 1839 to 1932.

Only thing that annoys me about it is the slots for commemoratives... I think any type set should exclude coins never intended for circulation (means shouldn't be a lost for an American Silver Eagle either, but filled it any way for the heck of it). Kind of mean to put a trade dollar slot in there too lol, but maybe one day can fill that too.

As to how detailed you want to get into on substypes, that's a matter of personal preference I guess. Can range to just major types to whatever obverse/reverse types exist, maybe even metal types. (For example, you can call Lincoln sets a single type, or you can insist that VDB, wheat, steel, copper Lincoln Memorial and zinc Lincoln Memorial each consist of a separate type.) I'm statisfied with the way Dansco handles it for now and going by that as far as types go, using my own preferences to decide what to put in there (for example, I put a forward facing Jefferson nickel in there as a Jefferson type, since the old portrait of him is already covered by the war nickel.) Usually aim for a common but high condition coin as an example of the type. If high condition is too steep, will stick to Fine/EF at the very least so as to have a good representation of the type.
