Wow, this has been one great thread, with great information. But, back to the original question...anyone know where I can get a list of the WCG Types that the Whitman Type coin guidebook uses? PS..I emailed the company, and they had no idea. Customer No-Service strikes again.

All I can say is wow again. :thumb: I'm sorry Ugaman, but I'll leave this question to the pros. Sorry to hear you couldn't get any help from the company. Good luck getting the info you need. :thumb:

What they are telling you is that there is no published list of the full numbering series. That may well be because some numbers were deliberately skipped, or some numbers were used for types/varieties that were later determined to be incorrectly identified.

By the way...Just received new information today on a popular Type album. I bought one of the new Intercept Shield Type Albums from a favorite seller on Ebay. He notified me today that the shipments had to be sent back because of misspelled words on the album along with some misplaced labels. Oh well, guess I'll just keep using the old 7070 for now.

    Ugaman72,

I apologize for not answering your question earlier. The WGC is not actually a catalog number but Whitman's approximate market value for that particular type coin so if you see a WGC type 396 then it's Whitman's best guess that you can get a type of that coin series for $396.

If you pick up the latest edition of the Red Book Price guide you will see a type set table w/values for each condition at the beginning of each coin series and this in effect is the same thing as your "WCG Type #"

Just a word of warning, this price is just a base and it's questionable as to how dependable it is since: 1.) based on older red book prices, and 2.) It's based on cumulative/availability and not individual years.

The only thing I can't remember is what grade they use for each coin.

If you have any other questions in regards to type set collecting feel free to e-mail me or leave a message on my website that you had kind words for earlier.

    Best of Luck,
    Ken

Thanks Stevie and Welcome to the forum!

That's one of the sites we are already discussing. Ugaman's original question was about WCG numbers and the thread seems to have taken some really neat twists and turns. Anyone think we should start a new thread for type sets where collectors can show off collections?

Oops, I see that now. That's what I get for skimming instead of reading.

I'll be more than happy to show off what I have so far. It's not even close to being complete...but, I'm proud of what I have nevertheless. PS...This has to be one of the best threads I've seen on Types. I'm glad to learn that types are still popular.

By the way, I do something unusual when I collect for my type set that I don't do for my normal collections. I actually look for cleaned coins. The reason is that I really can't afford MS examples of most of these types. Therefore, I'm left with less than stellar examples. Sometimes I'll look for and buy coin s that have been mildly dipped or cleaned. This way the coin is much cheaper..plus it shows all of the detail it can in such a grade. I would never clean a non-cleaned coin, but I can and do buy them for my type set.
