I have read reports on another forum that 1957 sets are good sets to check. About half have TWO Philly type B's and half have none. I know of no other dates that are apt to be fruitful except you are apt to find a 1970 D Type M in a 1970 mint set.
I have the exact same numbers as you do TC. I have not found any other Type IIs in any other mint sets.
I have head some say that all 1959 Mint sets have Type B quarters. I know this to be untrue as I have searched many to find the four that I have now. It is quite possible that the Type B's are more likely to be found in the envelopes with the Philadelphia, PA return address though. I have never found a Type B quarter in a mint set with a San Francisco, CA return address on the envelope. Of course, this makes sense since proofs were made in Philadelphia during these years. Mintage of the 1959 mint set is only 187,000. Imagine if the vast majority of Type B's went into sets that year; the 1959 Type B may be very limited mintage in that case. TC
I picked this quarter up on TT last night and believe that it is an unattributed Type B. I got it for my max bid of $50. The obverse is very cool and definitely overshadows/overwhelms the reverse. I am hoping that this is one of those coins that looks even better in hand. Regardless, it seems like a pretty nice strike, and the 57 is one of the few Type B's missing from my collection. Any thoughts? Should I keep it as is for awhile or send it to NGC to get attributed? You do not see that many toned Type B's out there. TC
<<1956-1964 are the years so far found that I know of. So Keep looking through your collections.>> Sorry, anytime somebody mentions 1956-1964 as the range of circuilation strike B's, I can't resist saying "don't forget the 1969 D thru 1972 D's".
<<You got any of those you wanna sell? >> I am seriously considering selling a few. Mine are all circulated to some extent. Until recently, I was afraid nobody was interested in clads, especially circulated ones. But now I do detect an interest. 19Lyds is in line ahead of you. I have yet to figure out exactly how I am going to do it. Thanks for the interest.
Both jaceravone and I have been big fans of "Proof Art On Circs" for some time. We have most of the silver quarters and halves...but none of the clad coins. We had no idea there was a Type-M reverse quarter, either...thanks for sharing!
I guy in my coin club has informed that he has obtained a full rull of 1962 unc type B quarters. When asked how much he was selling each one for, he responed that it was around $12-15. I was freaking out because that was a steal IMO compared to some of the other prices that I paid for similar coins. Unfortuately, he was all sold out and he had only one left that was in some bad need for a good dip. I told hime next time that he comes accross something like that to give me a holler.
Just received the unattributed 1957 Type B in the mail today, and it does look even better in hand. Time for me to join NGC and send it in for the variety attribution. I may just have to send in some of my raw Type B's as well. TC
Congrats on your big finds!!! Forget joining NGC. Join the ANA and get free submission privileges to NGC. :thumb:
Bought a $1,000 dollar bag of circulated quarters, and my eyes were open for the type B quarters. I looked through the entire bag, and got ZERO type by clad quarters. I did get some DMPL Yosemite, and some choice Bicentennial. And finally, one lone 1963 silver. So I set it aside, not even giving it a second look. It sat for two days till yesterday, when I did a search on this forum for the years of type B to look for. And there, in all it's glory, was a type B 1963. With a die break. The type B are indeed tough. At least as tough as Wide AM pennies. Thanks for the tips.
