Two US gold coins with wierd damage

    Hi thanks for stopping in to try and help. This is my first post here.

    I just received a bunch of coins that my grandpa saved up for me. I know the basics of coins collecting, if that.

    Anyhow two gold coins i have, one is a gold dollar type 1 1852, have bad damage. The other sides looks good though. I have no guess as to what could've caused the damage? Actually my only guess is that a little piece of metal got welded to the coins.

    They look like they have had pins soldered to them so they could be used as jewelry.

    You are absolutely correct. Used as stick pins.

    I agree stick pins, but they my be a better variety ?

    Thanks for the fast and certain answer. So these coins are probably only worth melt value?
