Two Unfinished Masterpieces. The offset background on the front of the enlarged version of the portrait of Abraham Lincoln as depicted on the $100 dollar Gold Certificate. The portrait of Lincoln .Miscellaneous Die # 1029.was engraved by Charles Burt in 1869.The rest of the note was completed in 1908 by Edward M. Hall,G.U.Rose Jr,Robert Ponickau and Edward E. Myers. The source ofthis engraving was a photograph taken at the Matthew brady studio in 1864. the $100 Gold Certificate Miscellaneous Die # 7046 was intended to be used for the 1908 Series. This Series was never issued. The second "Unfinished Masterpiece" wasthe $10 Silver Certificate for the Educational Series of 1896. This engraving of the vignette entitled "Agriculture and Forestry" was executed by Charles Schlecht, based upon the design submitted by Walter Shirlaw,a Scottish-born artist, illustrator, and engraver. Mr. Shirlaw also had been commissioned to prepare the design for the $5 note of the Educational series. The $ 10 notes were not printed since bills of that denomination were not specifically provided for in the ACT of Congress of August 4,1886 that authorized the 1896 series of notes. The $5 Educational series is considered by some to be the most beautiful note ever engraved on a U.S. Note I would like to thank RickieB for his help and support of the group with this last minute addition of his beautiful Framed Vignettes. Was Security Engravers Group Presentation #9 (Fill in)
Connor1.. Thank you for filling in for our friend Daggarjon... We do hope that he is ok and can place his presentation into the mix as soon as we hear from him. Bravo on a job well done. RickieB
Thanks Rickie, Short notice but those framed Vignettes really made the difference, hope DJ is alright !
I used to collect Souvenir Cards & dug them out of the closet on short notice ,a lot of info on the backs of these cards & some are intaglio printed !
That is one heck of a note, that $5. And the whole series, for that matter, they would be the gems of most any collection. Not so sure about the guy in the burlap sack clothes for the $10 certificate Nice job on a short notice, Connor. I hope DJ in on the mend, whatever his infliction! Dave
LOL...the guy in the burlap sack clothes must be "Agriculture because he doesn't look like Forestry to me!
Great presentation. I have to agree with those who consider the Educational Series our most beautiful notes. They are truly special.
Great Post Connor! I love both of those two unfinished notes! Maybe someday the BEP will release them? Wouldn't that be something! This would have been the year for Lincoln... Thanks for the informative post!
Thanks, USS656, I was thinking the same thing the Lincoln would only have to be re-engraved from a Gold Certificate to a Federal Reserve Note .
And Connor1 must have stayed up all week to put this fine presentation together!! Just look at the vignette examples... Great Job Connor1 RickieB
I will not forget the excitement of our friend Connor1 when we initiated this Group. He was 1000% behind it and so loved the Master Engravers of a tme that seems to have been but a fleeting moment of yesteryear. Thank you Peter, I appreciate the addition in Memory of our friend. Kind regards, RickieB
Gone but not forgotten, Connor lives on in his works published here on this eminent forum. The advice and knowledge he offered so generously will continue to help and inspire all who read what he has contributed to these boards.......
One of many wonderful and informative pieces by Connor-1, though he has passed he Will forever be part of the C.T community
Thanks for featuring this on the home page, mods/Peter.(?) It was great seeing one of Bob's old presentations on Security Engraving revived and I enjoyed rereading it almost with completely fresh eyes. The Security Engravers Group presentations were a very fun and close time among the Paper Money forum participants, and we dearly miss Bob's presence, but benefit from his legacy and quality of posts left here to learn from.
+1. I miss how excited and supportive he was about collecting. Hope we can continue that in this forum.
