Two recent arrivals for my Classic Head/Cohen Variety Half Cent set. You can see by the labels that they haven't been officially attributed yet. When I get 1 or 2 more I'll send them all in as a group (and hope I ID'ed them correctly). If I'm correct then I have 18 out of the 25 Cohen varieties.
Those are very nice. Used to have one in my type set but had to part with it and others to get plumbing work done.
Well those two won't be hard to identify, but I won't spoil your fun. Does that 25 include the 31 and 36? What kind of grade are you hoping to get the 09 C-1 and 1811's in?
Nope, with one exception, I don't collect proof coins. The exception is my birth year set (1941). For the 09 C-1 I'd like an XF but could live with a VF. Or a good looking (XF/AU) DETAILS coin. I already have 2 DETAILS coins in my collection: -- an 1831 Capped Bust Quarter/Reduced Diameter, Browning-7, R-5+ in Fine Details -- a 1796 Draped Bust Dime in AU Details So another DETAILS coin wouldn't annoy me much. Or with luck I could cherrypick a nice one off eBay. As for the 1811's I have two of them already. -- a Close date C-1 4-star Break, VF-35, R-4 -- a Wide date C-2, XF-40, R-3 Considering their value mine must be condition rarities. The R-4 and R-3 don't make sense otherwise.
Part of the problem with the 1811's is just that it is one of the rarest years in the series, and the other is that most of them are low grade. But they do exist in high grade. The 09 C-1 is a different matter, the finest known in the condition census is a VF-35 (eac grading) The top 10 are 35, 30, 3 lower grade VF's, 3 in Fine and 2 VG This is the finest known, it sold in the Missouri Cabinet for $57,500 (PCGS called it an AU-55 and it got a CAC green bean)
You probably won't find an 1809 C1 in XF, as none are known to exist. The 1811 C1 is the wide date variety. If you have one with the 4-star break, it's a wide date C1. Either 1811 in the grades you indicate would be very lovely coins. I'd love to see photos.
Here's my one and only 1/2 cent. Any idea as to a grade? I'm not too familiar with the strike quality with these, so I'm guessing XF. If strikes were often weak, it might make it to AU (yeah right). It's chocolate brown. The photo is lightened to show more detail.
I thought I posted images of my two 1811 half cents. Did they get removed or did I screw up? I'll re-post them if it turns out that it was my fault that they're missing.
Lovely. I haven't had a half cent in a long time. I think this Spiked Chin was the last one, and that's been oh, six or seven years ago now, I guess. (Yeah, I know- it's not a Classic Head.)
Nice half cents, Kanga. I specially like the 1835. I actively collect early coppers, but for some reason, the later date half cents have never really attracted my attention. I do have a a few, however. This is my 1835.
Here is the best Classic Head Half Cent I have. It's still raw. I bought in an EAC Auction some years ago.
