What a nice photo, there's a cosiness many of us rarely experience. I'm a member of a tiny monthly coin club in my town, with some 12 members between 50 and 80 and a high level of ancient-coin-mindedness. Pleasant enough, but we rarely visit each other at home - once or twice a year. Still, I think I'm lucky, all happens to be on walking distance from my home.
S I looked up the term too just now. Some of what I saw in the Wikipedia write up was negative criticism of "Red Shirt" photography. I meant it in the best possible way, in fact I use the technique myself. Okay, okay I confess! I'm an art school graduate. LOL! But that was many years ago.
Great picture and story. I wish I had a library... except I wouldn't call it a library. I would call it the "coin room." I live in a major metro area, and I *still* haven't managed to find a shop that sells stuff I like, I enjoy visiting, and is within 30 minutes drive of where I live. Thank God for coin shows. I'm lucky enough that I can visit a local show about once a month.
Lol, yeah the LCS''s don't do ancients. I've picked up a few nice moderns from the in the past. As far as shows in state there's one in May about a 2 hour drive. Then ANACS had a show locally in a suburb this past November which is unheard of. I had some family issues that came up at the last moment & didn't make it. I can see now why they say Oklahoma is ok, it's certainly not good but really not terrible either.
About half of my rather modest collection of ancients has come from shows. The other half (which includes the couple of truly rare pieces I have) has come from online dealers.
Here is the original VAuctions listing. I had forgotten I won it there. Was thinking it was a CNG purchase. Michael and I were discussing how the OP of this thread got so many "likes". Can't be because of us. It had to be the cupcakes.
Ancients collectors are not easy to spot! All of them don't wear corduroy jackets with patches on the elbows and smoke pipes. The only ancients collector that I know in real life looks more like Danny Trejo.
Deacon, is Danny a member of your church ? Thanks for the info about Big Al , Rob. You 2 look like the Quality Control of a grading department, Michael doing the last check up before the coin is returned to its owner.
Just went into a LCS yesterday in Ventura, CA and since it wasn't busy I got to talking to the owner and mentioned ancients. He remarked that he had some and my heart jumped as I asked to see them. He said he didn't have any there at this time but to come in in a couple of weeks...be still my heart.
That was a pretty good score on "Big Al." Even with the cost of slabbing, I think you did well. So few Alexander tets have the full design on flan, and this one has great style and eye appeal as well. A dealer I know would probably say it has "stage presence."
I'm originally from Fremont, I miss it more & more every year that passes. More ironic is I'm thinking about heading east to Virginia to pursue (hopefully) better work. Palmdale has had some promising sounding work but convincing family to go hasn't worked out. For years I've believed Oklahoma to be anti numistatic, really anti collecting unless you want to drag race, lol.
ancient coins AND cupcakes....and i wasn't invited?! ah....man...... that's cool you got to hang doing some "face to face" coining with some of your coin buddies.
