I am the proud owner of this bale of Aegean turtles. Yep, a group of turtles is called a bale. I’d sure appreciate some help authenticating & dating these beautiful silver stators. Let me introduce each of the turtles (to be dated) and provide a little background information which may be entertaining. From very early times until its conquest by Athens in B.C. 456 Aegina was one of the greatest commercial states of Greece. Here is a great link describing Aegina and the turtle coins of the BritishMuseum: http://www.snible.org/coins/hn/aegina.html
______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ This latest archeological find sheds much light on the origin of the famed teenage mutant ninja turtles of North America. It is now theorized that the North American ninja turtles may have originated on the island of Aegina. (See map above). The theory is that the Aegean turtle coins were buried within an amphora containing high concentrations of the Greek liquor Ouzo. The long term exposure to this OOZE-o mutated the hatchlings into the modern day warriors (ie. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). Of course, this is just a theory. The duration of ooze exposure and the date of hatchling mintage may be correlated with everyone’s help at CT. The question is; how long ago were these turtles minted? Also, at the NYINC can someone pay for a purchase with a money pouch full of Aegean stators?
All the Mutant Turtles wear a colored mask that distinguishes them from each other. Leonardo wears a blue mask. Donatello is the purple masked turtle. Raphael wears the red and Michelangelo sports the orange one. Here is Donatello. (12.00 grams, 20.6 mm x 15.7 mm x 7.3 mm thick) __________________________________________ Here is the serious, wise, & patient leader Leonardo. (12.23 grams, 24.7 mm x 13.1 mm x 7.1 mm thick) __________________________________________ Here is wisecracking-jokester Michelangelo. (12.16 grams, 17.8 mm x 16.6 mm x 9.7 mm thick). This Mikey-coin is round like a ball ! __________________________________________ Here is Raphael. (12.10 grams, 19.2 mm x 16.6 mm x 6.7 mm thick) __________________________________________
Hilarious! I don't have one of these yet and unfortunately can't help with attribution, but those are some nice new half-shell pickups. Congrats!
Here is the fifth turtle in the batch: I affectionately call this one April after the protagonist female character that provides the ninja turtles with their missions. April weighs 12.27 grams and is 22.6 mm x 152 mm x 6.8 mm in size. I was thinking that perhaps all the turtles in this bale are from this dating period: http://www.snible.org/coins/bmc/attica/XXIII.jpg Does this put the ninja turtles birth date around 600 to 550 B.C.or are they from a later period? Wa da ya think?
Wow C89, awesome Turtles, i was going to buy Raphael the other day and when i came back, SOLD, so you bought them all, glad they went to a good home, i just need to move faster...Very nice bale..
I can tell you from my extensive research into these coins that they are old. Quite old. Apart from that, I did not know that a group of turtles was called a bale, but it doesn't sound anywhere near as exciting as a murder of crows.
Love how you put TMNT into those awesome pieces C89. You could call it Slash (aka Spike), since in the new TMNT series he's a turtle.
Wow!! => C89, those are soooooo fricken awesome!!! => I love the random shapes (very cool additions) sadly, I only have one turtle example ... oh, but he has always been a real disappointment to the rest of his bale ... yah, the other balers are always pointing and laughing at my weak example (sometimes words hurt) ... anyway ... we both push-on (my lil' fella, Yertle, has always been a true inspiration) Cheers
. You obviously know your TMNT. Perhaps this fake Mesembria Diobol could be called Shredder (the arch nemesis of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). Anyone have a coin depicting master Spinter (rat) ? This link might work: http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q...&mid=74118C82FCAC2F49AA2974118C82FCAC2F49AA29
I really like the crystallized silver appearance. (I'm also liking my Centenario Tequila tonight so I better stay away from Ebay for awhile).
I own one turtle, but really know very little about the differing issues. This is the earliest issued coin I own: ATTICA, AEGINA AR Stater OBVERSE: Sea-turtle (T-backed); head in profile REVERSE: Large square incuse with skew pattern Struck at Aegina, 480-457BC 11.96g, 20mm SNG Cop 507 Ex CNG
As I recall Master Spinter occasionally accuses the turtles as having no heads on their shoulders. I would love to have a Leonardo but with a good head rather than a flipper. My turtle was once dated for me by someone who claimed to know as after 480 BC but the seller claimed it was before 500. I do not know what is correct or what reference is considered current. I also like my little obol or whatever it is since it weighs a whole gram which is a lot for an obol.
