A nice find in Turkey. (Sorry if this is a repost.) Once we know more, this could be an interesting and important piece of history. https://www.aa.com.tr/en/culture/collection-of-priceless-roman-coins-unearthed-in-turkey/2124620
Very interesting hoard showing how important the cistophorus was in the economy of Asia Minor at the time.
Interesting story! too bad the pictures are blurry... I think I also see a RIC 410, Augustus with simpulum, tripod etc reverse. Also an Octavian coins with the M AGRIPPA COS DESIG reverse. Wonder what the obverse is. If it's confronting busts, then we have a winner! And a RR of Plancus, with the Medusa head obverse?
Also, it looks like most of them will clean up well. May need a bit of lemon juice or something a bit stronger.
A little follow-up: https://www.ancient-origins.net/news-history-archaeology/ancient-roman-coins-0014865 Quick question: What is the coin [?] in the middle image that has the writing on the reverse (DESIG)?
Agrippa https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=3317631 or https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=3359237
I hope that the hoard is thoroughly studies before, or if, it is broken up. So much historical information is lost when a hoard such as this one is quickly dispersed. There seems to be some wonderful and rare coins here.
Well usually when a hoard like this is found, all you get to see is the coins appearing out of nowhere in various auctions.
