I am having a tough time with this Greek or provincial AE ive never seen before looks like head of Hermes in winged cap right with a somewhat turreted head of maybe tyche on other side script that is legible is ΛΝΙΟΝ or ΑΛΚΙΟΝ ? or -?ΜΙΟΝ to left and on right side is maybe SCO///- My gut says a middle/near east mint or thereabouts with the red color in the patina and the Tyche-ish bust , any guesses? thanks for any help Marcos
Cool! I believe you have the personification off the Roman Senate and Roma. My guess is this... Pergamon, Mysia, AE17, 10-138 AD. ΘEON CYN-KΛETΩN, draped bust of the Senate right / ΘEAN ΡΩ-MHN, turreted and draped bust of Roma right. SNG von Aulock 7526; BMC 216; SNG Righetti 749.
MYSIA, Pergamon CE 40-60, time of Caligula to Nero Æ15, 3.2 gm, 12 h Obv: ΘЄON PΩMHN; bust of Roma with mural crown right. Rev: ΘЄON CYNKΛHTON; laureate bust of Senate right. Ref: RPC 2374; SNG Aul.1385
I don't know the precise ID of the OP coin. Could be what you posted, could be what I posted, or some other slight variant .. bottom line is turreted Roma / bust of Senate, and the OP was exactly right with his "Tyche-ish bust". I'm not sure how the bust on my coin came to be identified as Roma rather than Tyche.
thanks so much all ! the size and weight are a match as well I forgot to add those,, but i guess it didnt matter
Here's my senate/roma combo! HERMOCAPELIA, LYDIA: TIME OF HADRIAN 117-138 AD O: Bust of Senate. R: Turreted head of Roma. SNG Cop 165. 17 mm, 2.5 g
