[QUOTE="cladking, post: 22789, member: 68"]Most of the best moderns are found in the regular mint set offerred annually by the mint. The average quality in these sets is always higher than the average quality in rolls. There are a few coins that the best specimens come from BU rolls but this is very unusual. There are quite a few coins that don't appear in the mint sets at all so the only place to find them is in rolls or as singles. Dime and quarter rolls are exceedingly elusive so there is little option but to seek them in sets.

The best bet is to look at mint sets and pick nice examples from this source. Many mint set coins are heavily marked or corroded. Some poor strikes also appear in these sets. You'll quite possibly need to buy a few of each date to be confident of getting all the coins which are pretty nice. Some coins are much tougher and will require extensive search. The toughest quarter in the set is the '69 which is usually very unattractive and has multiple problems. The '82-P is the toughest of the quarters in nice choice condition but doesn't appear in regular mint sets. Few rolls of these exist and souvenir mint set coins also tend to be poor. Most of the best of these are found in the sets issued by Numismatic News as a subscription premium or the blue and red set issued by Paul and Judy's coins. There are several others that will prove difficult. In Ikes the '74 is toughest in choice condition from mint sets.

Don't worry about cutting up the sets. The premium on these tends to be very low (or negative) compared to the value of the coins in them. A few of the later dates (like '97) are expensive to cut though. Avoid buying complete sets to upgrade since most of these will need to have every coin in the set upgraded and they have gotten pretty pricey.

Good Luck.
