Well I've already modified my original list. I have no Flavian Dynasty coins to share, which is a gaping hole in my collection, but I do have half a dozen selections in my vcoins cart, so that may be rectified soon. 1. Julio-Claudian, Gaius Caesar, Laodicea... 2. Trajan, drachm of Bostra, Provincia Arabia... 3. Severan Dynasy, denarius of Septimius Severus, FORTUNA... 4. Sestertius of Gordian III, Victory... 5. Gallic Empire, Ant of Postumus... To be continued...
Long ago on another list the question was posed "What do people collect?" I assembled the answers here: http://esty.ancients.info/numis/collect.html Maybe it will give you some ideas.
6. Tetrarchical, follis of Galerius... 7. Constantinian Dynasty, follis of Constantine the Great... 8. Valentinian Dynasty, Valentinian I, AE3, Victory... 9. Theodosian Dynasty, AE3 of Theodosius I, Concordia...
Well, since the new Flavian RIC II was published in 2007 one could indeed add two coins for volume 2: One Flavian and one adoptive. I recommend a Judaea Capta denarius for the Flavian example, an iconic type that was very important to the dynasty.
Yes, we next have to address what the best single coin for each of these areas might be. For this thread, I selected slightly better grade coins and not the ones of greatest interest. As for the new RIC II - will there be a part two? There is a great online resource for volume V part 1. Will there be a part 2? The answer to most of my questions is 'not in my lifetime'! Junkers - but better types than my bull:
I'm not holding my breath. It has now been 8 years since RIC II part 1 came out and not even the promised stop-gap reprint of the Nerva-Hadrian section has emerged, let alone a whole new volume (which apparently is still in the works?).
ok, back to AN's original post...here's my "one of each" collection. of course, i'm trying to divide up an existing collection...this isn't something i tried to do. big greek and little greek bronze: archaic greek silver: classic greek silver: indogreek: indo, but not greek: china asian, but not really indo/greek/ or chinese more coming...
roman republican bronze: roman republican silver: early roman imperial: middle roman imperial: late roman imperial: roman provincial, alexandrian tets roman provincial, asia minor: roman provincial, but greek:
byzantine, early byzantine, later islamic medieval western europe misc east: misc west: misc in the middle: ...something like that.
I have a sneaking suspicion that for many of us "one of each" would, by preference, be "one of each type in the British Museum." Unfortunately ...
