Speedy, Let me try and explain. The buffalos leg was indented into the die but it was also the shallowest indentatation. So when the field of the die was polished down it was ground away resulting in the leg indentation being shallower and shallower until finally the field and the indentation were at the same level and at that point the buffalos foreleg disappeared. Think of this as the surface of a die with two indentations, one deep one shallow. ___ .___ ___ before the fields are ground down (Ignore the dots I had to ... ! .!.. !_!.... include them to keep the image positioned right. It won't allow two spaces.) ... !_! ___ .______ After the fields are ground down ... !_! As you can see one indentation disappears completely and the other one is shallower than before. (foreleg disappeared, hind leg is shallower and ratty looking.) Other things that happen are devices get further apart. This is why the E Pluribus Unum is further from the buffalos back and the buffalo is slightly smaller.
Ah....thanks Conder....that had me wondering.... So really...not only was the leg worn down but also the area around the leg more than then anything....right? Thanks alot!! Speedy
Wow - so far 3 - 1 S VDB over the 3 Legger. I didn't think we'd have such a good discussion or I'd have added more to the poll, like c.) both- in a lesser grade d.) neither etc. Oh well. Live and learn Esky
