Picked up a coin which I thought looked interesting from the sellers picture. When I got it it definitely looks much better in hand. Alexandria, Troas 3rd century A.D. / AE21 , 5.5g O: CO-L TROA, turreted bust of Tyche right, vexillum inscribed CO/AV behind neck R: COL AVG, horse grazing right, TRO below BMC 48 You know the rules. Post any Troas, Tyche, or horse coins you got.
@icerain what a great coin. I bet only the camera got the scratches on the horse, and bet you cannot see them in hand. That is a great looking coin! My TROAS (even has a horse!): RI Valerian I 253-260 CE AE 20mm Alexandria Troas mint Horse Grazing My Tyche: Cilicia - Tarsos turret counterstamped Bow Pompei Pirates AE 19 164 BCE Tyche-Zeus seated Turreted: RR Anon AE Semuncia 217-215 BC Turreted Horseman Whip Roma #2 Cr 39-5 S 619 RR Anon AE Semuncia 217-215 BC Turreted Horseman Whip Roma Cr 39-5 S 619 My Horses: LOL, nope on posting "HORSES". I collect RR denarii, Quadrigatii, Carthage, etc. and have a couple hundred horses at LEAST. but, how about a couple Numidian Horses? Numidia - Micipsi - 148-118 BCE Numidia - Massinissa
I'm not sure those are scratches though it might be. The high points may be worn exposing the layer underneath or something else. The parts on the horse and hair on Tyche are shiny/ luster.
Wow, that OP-example has Mega eye-appeal (congrats icerain) Ummm, Troas? .... really? ... okay, wait a sec
Wonderful coin @icerain !!! I love the type...and like all of those who posted they all have such great eye-appeal! My three examples of Troas---Tyche and horse; Tyche and suckling wolf; Gallienus and ...damn, another horse
Mine is for sale at the current agoraauctions.com auction 60, lot 110: Troas, Alexandria Troas. Civic issue. Mid-late 3rd century A.D. AE 23 (23.0 mm, 5.85 g, 7 h). CO ALEX TRO, turreted and draped bust of Tyche right; vexillum behind / COL AVG TROA, she-wolf right, head left, suckling the twins Remus and Romulus. cf. Bellinger A495; SNG Copenhagen 104-7.
Whatever the streaks are, they really make the reverse, in my opinion. Purdy cool horse with the streaks... Maybe an ICE RAIN storm!
Handsome example, icerain. This is one of my favorite coins... SEVERUS ALEXANDER AE24. 6.97g, 24.6mm. TROAS, Alexandria Troas, AD 222-235. cf. Bellinger A341 (obv) & A338 (rev), possibly unrecorded with this obverse and reverse combination. O: IMP SEV ALEXANDER AVG, laureate, draped & cuirassed bust left, holding spear & shield decorated with head of Medusa. R: COL AVG, horse grazing right, herdsman (Ordes?) behind holding pedum (shepherd's crook), tree to left, TROAC in ex.
