The Twoonie is an affectionate name given to Canada's two dollar coins. The first Canadian $2.00 coin was struck for circulation on February 19, 1996 to replace the $2.00 bill. It is bimetallic and has the split-ring design. The ring is composed of .99 plus nickel and the core is composed of .92 copper, .06 aluminum and .02 nickel. Like most of Canada's coins, there are collector strikes.

The collector strikes in 1996 were struck iin five different varieties: bronze, bronze-gilt, silver, silver piedfort, and gold. The 1999
$2.00 Nunavut commemorative coins have three different reverses. Each different reverse features a different quality strike: brilliant uncirculated/ narrow ring, specimen/wide ring, and proof/no ring.

A 1999 mule was struck as part of the "Brilliant Uncirculated" sets.

There is a particularly unique collector's $2.00 coin. It is in the "Proud Polar Bear Stamp and Coin Set" of 2004 which was a joint venture of the RCM and the Canada Post. The set contains a cancelled $2.00 stamp, a mint $2.00 stamp and a sterling silver $2.00 coin.(the first non-bimetallic $2.00 coin).

The other unique feature is the coin has two privy marks on it: the Royal Canadian Mint's privy mark and the Canada Post's privy mark.

I hope you enjoyed this trivia.
