The mint had just finished striking 1945 5 Centavos and 10 Centavos coins for the Philippines (the last United States of America issues). Some of those S mint mark die punches were not used and were placed in a room where unused punches were stored until they could be returned to Philadelphia. Shortly afterwards the mint started producing more '45-S Dimes and needed to replace a well- worn Mercury Dime S mint mark punch.
