    Welcome to a "treatise" on the coinage of 20th century Portugal.
    Under King Carlos I and King Manuel II the kingdom of Portugal did not strike a proof coin in the in the 20th century until 1910, the last year of the Kingdom. Manuel II authorized the striking of two proof coins:
    1. KM #557 A silver 500 reis honoring Marquis De Pombal.
    A. 400,000 circulation coins were struck.
    B. An unknown amount of proofs were struck.
    2. KM#558 A silver 1,000 reis commemorating the centennial of the Peninusular War.

    A. 200,000 business strikes were minted.
    B. An unknown number of proofs were struck.
    The Republic of Portugal came into being late in 1910, but didn't mint any coins until 1913 when 548,000 silver 20 centavos coins (KM#562) were produced for circulation. Now, some of you are going to ask, "What about the 1910 silver escudo (KM#560)?" My answer is, "Forget it!" The escudo bearing the 1910 date was not authorized by the Republic's government until 1914.
    More about proofs. The Republic didn't mint proof coins until 1977 when 13,000 copper-nickel proof 2 1/2 escudos (KM#605) and 13,000 copper-nickel 25 escudos (KM#608) were struck commemorating the death of poet, Alexandre Herculano. www.worldcoingallery.com/countries/coin.php?image=img6/145-608&desc=Portugal km608 25 Escudos (1977)
    Besides the proof coinage 5,590,000 business strikes of each denomination were made.
    There's two more important items to know.
    1. In 1935 two coins were produced soley for distribution to the Azores;
    A. 902,000 copper-nickel 50 centavos (KM#577) www.worldcoingallery.com/countries/...77&desc=Portugal km577 50 Centavos (1927-1968)
    An unknown amount of copper-nickel escudos (KM#578) www.worldcoingallery.com/countries/...5-578&desc=Portugal km578 1 Escudo (1927-1968)
    2. From time to time the Lisbon Mint, after striking regular coinage, would produce a small amount of that coinage in a "matte" finish under a private contract.

    NOTE 1: Duriing the 20th century Portugal coinage included the striking of three essais, 63 different patterns, thirty-three different provos, and produced six trial strikes, thirty-two different mint sets and forty-four different proof sets
    (most of them bettween 1987 and 2000) (six proof sets were double-year sets and four "prestige" proof sets were made.

    Clinker,in 1910,there was also a silver 500 Reis issued to commemorate the Centenary of the Peninsular War.King Manuel II's coins are very attractive pieces,especially the bronze 1910 5 Reis.
