You can also get the Maple Leaves in platinum as well.I can guess that WhispTech will have bought some of these to add to his collection of Canadian medal-coins. Do you agree with me on this? Aidan.
2 things....any rich people out there ever try to spend an AGE/ASE/APE? I was wondering what % of retailers would accept them (at face value of course). Where I used to work in high school we wouldn't accept anything since we got a fake $100 bill once. Someone once turned down a roll of "counterfeit" nickels that were in actuality a roll of buffalo nickels. I wish I could have gotten that. Another time someone tried paying with exact change and one of the nickels was older (still Jefferson) and the idiot cashier thought it was fake...who in their right mind would fake a nickel? 2nd thing....why can't the mint make $1 coins the size of the old silver dollars. I know people hate that idea since they're way too big but I think they're kind of cool. I've got an Ike dollar in the change pocket of my wallet along with a 1957 5 centavo (Mexico) coin for good luck (my favorite football team, the Detroit Lions last won a championship in 1957). Back to Ikes, etc. they just make more sense to me. The bigger the coin the more it's worth (other than pennies, I mean cents, and nickels since they were never silver). Having coins the size of quarters worth 4X as much is just dumb. Lastly, if we must call them golden dollars why can't they at least be gold plated? To the best of my knowledge it takes virtually no gold to plate a coin so it wouldn't really cost the mint a whole lot to make 'em. If they're concerned with price just shrink them down so they're the size of the old 20 cent pieces...that would be better anyways since they wouldn't look like quarters and they'd actually be gold (sort of at least).
I've tried... Just Kidden and I sure aint rich... More the opposite I'd say... Isin't there some type of Fedral or other law that businesses have to accept it, if its legit, US MOney??? It would not be worth it, but I think they could be made to take it.... I agree, thats what I was saying... I'd love to get some brand new Morgan, Peace or IKE Dollars... 90% Silver, .999 Silver or Clad, they would still be cool... Gold is still way to expensive... Look what a Gram goes for on ebay... Also, how mny people would get rolls of Quarters, dollars, whatever the coins and try to scrap the gold off for its worth and still try to use the coin (obviiously, now worth less)... Also, gold plate would wear off ay too quick under normal circulation, I think... Gold even by the gram is still expensive.... What if gold shoots up too 800 an O again.... How much will your dollar be worth then? Will everyone hoard and or melt them???
You addressed most of my points pretty well. A couple follow-ups: Although the AGE/APE/ASEs are legal tender and everything, most people have no idea what they are. I'd be wiling to bet if you pulled out a 1/10 oz. AGE and tried to buy a $4.99 Big Mac and Fries the cashier wouldn't accept it. Back to the gold plating I understand gold is very expensive but they make lots of gold-plated things and I think that it takes almost no gold to plate something. I think even a gram would last for tons and tons of coins and scraping it off would be pointless. Pennies (or, more precisely, cents) are copper plated and nobody tries to take the copper coating off because there is virtually no copper on a penny. They could also try a gold plug like the really old cents (1792) used to do with silver. Make the plug really tiny so that it takes about $.03-.10 to make. Since it's a dollar coin they could afford to spend a few cents on the gold.
Hey everybody..... Thanks for the additions and the questions...and your answers to the questions.... Clinker
