In 1913 the then Mexican President, Francisco Madero, was assassinated. Soon afterwards the governor of Chihuahua, Abraham Gonzales, met the same fate. Martial Law was decreed in Chihuahua on the 10th of February 1914. One of the first tasks undertaken was the issuance of paper currency (notes). Weeks after the notes were released the populace in and around the State of Chihuahua began referring to them as Dos Caritas (en: 2 Little Faces).
