How Many 1 Ounce Silver Eagles Equals 1 Pound of Silver? OR...
    1. How many 1 0unce Gold Eagles equal 1 pound of gold?
    2. How many 1 ounce Platinum Eagles equal 1 pound of platinum?
    3. How many 1 ounce Gold American Buffalo coins equals 1 pound of gold?

The answer to all the foregoing questions is 12.
You see, gold, silver, platinum and gunpowder are measured in Troy Ounces. There are 12 Troy Ounces in a Troy Pound.

Your weight, the weight of candy, canned goods, cattle, meat, produce, etc. are measured in Avoirdupois Ounces and/or pounds where 16 ounces equals a pound.

The two ounces, Avoirdupois and Troy, are not exactly the same weight - and a Troy Ounce is over 9.7% heavier than an Avoirdupois Ounce!

    How do you pronounce Avoirdupois?

    answers.com gives the following:

The English pronunciation is A (as in Animal) VER (as in oVER) DOUR( as in oDOUR) POIS(as in POISon).

An regular Avoirdupois Ounce is exactly:
    28.349523125 grams
    0.911458333333 Troy ounces
    437.5 grains
    0.0625 pounds

    A Troy Ounce is exactly:
    31.1034768 grams
    1.097142857142857 Avoirdupois ounces
    480 grains
    0.06857142857142873 pounds

A Troy Ounce outweighs an Avoirdupois Ounce by 2.754053675 grams or by 42.5 grains.

Now, that I have your attention please note that:

    A. 12 Troy Ounces equals 1 Troy Pound which equals 373.2417216 grams or 5,760 grains.
    B. 16 Avoirdupois Onces equals 1 Avoirdupois Pound which equals 453.5925 grams or 7,000 grains.

Though 1 Troy Ounce is heavier than an Avoirdupois Ounce, an Avoirdupois Pound is heavier than a Troy Pound.

Converting from one to the other is easy:

To convert Avoirdupois Ounces to Troy Ounces:
    I. Multiply your number of Avoirdupois Ounces by 0.911458333333 (recurring)

II. To convert Troy Ounces to Avoirdupois Ounces:
Multiply your number of Troy Ounces by 1.097142857142857

If you are not a stickler for accuracy Lynn Coins gives you an easier way to convert:

Use this formula for an approximation to convert regular type weights to Troy Ounces.
Multiply number of regular ounces by .912 to get approximate number of Troy ounces

    Example:
A grapefruit weighs about 127.5 grams, or 4.5 Avoirdupois ounces.
    4.50 x .912 = 4.10 troy ounces.

To convert your Avoirdupois body weight in pounds to Troy Pounds use this formula:

X = your weight in pounds

    X times 16 times .912 divide by 12 =

    Example:

150 Avoirdupois Pounds times 16 equals 2400 Avoirdupois Ounces x .912 equals 2,188.8 Troy Ounces divide by 12 equals 182.4 Troy Pounds.

What does your actual weight convert to?

    Hope you enjoyed this post.

Wikipedia says "Although troy ounces are still used to weigh gold, silver and gemstones, the troy pound is no longer used."

...except in eBay auctions for ONE POUND OF SILVER COINS, which tend to draw bids based on the spot price of 16 troy ounces of silver, instead of "90% of the spot price of 12 troy ounces, minus losses due to wear".

A slightlycloser approximation is 41/45. Multiply by 41 and divide by 45.
Or to go from Troy to Avoirdupois, multiply by 45 and divide by 41.

Simple ... 12 ounces of either make 1 troy pound. There are 12 troy ounces to a troy pound of precious metals.

    u r welcome

To be further trivial, a gold American Eagle contains 1 ounce of gold but is alloyed with other metals, so the total weight is 1.0909 troy ounces and therefore there are 11 AGEs in a troy pound.

The question was "How many Silver Eagles equals 1 pound of silver?" 11 AGEs won't make it...

Dang, I was one of those thinking one pound of silver was 16 oz.
I have a one pound Silver Eagle and found out it was only 3/4 of what I thought I had!
