Yes, I think it is quite difficult to commemorate a "civil" war on coins from a country that encompasses both sides now. The depictions of heroic winning soldiers that can usually be found on war memorial coins from some countries would not make much sense in such a case. So that Half Dollar design is a pretty good one, I think. The Liberian piece I do not find well balanced. As for the 1995 US commems, the gold piece is OK, the silver dollar is too wordy, and the Half Dollar looks good in my opinion. By the way, why was the Gettysburg Half Dollar issued in 1936 instead of 1938? Christian
It is a good read but don't take it as historical fact, it is more historical fiction. While it is based on the Battle of Gettysburg, considerable artistic license was used with the facts.
I think you are confusing this with the Battle of New Orleans from the War of 1812 where Andrew Jackson defeated the British in a battle several weeks after the Treaty of Ghent was signed that ended the war. (Treaty signed 12/24/14, battle 1/08/15. Last battle was a British victory at the Battle of Fort Bowyer, Mobile Bay AL, on 2/15/15.)
