Another excellent and informative posting. One that rightfully salutes our first National Hero, the "Father" of our magnificent country. Absolutely crave the 1900, Lafayette Commemorative Dollar. Washington's personal papers reveal that these two brothers-in-arms were of kindred spirit, sharing a particular respect and admiration for each other that was forged in the crucible of warfare. In fact, in a letter written by the Marquis De Lafayette to Gen Washington in 1778, it is stated that "To act in concert with a man of great courage is the first of blessings." It's little known that, in addition to being our first POTUS, G Washington is the first POW to become our POTUS. During the French and Indian War, he was a colonel in the Virginia Colonial Militia. He and his small band of militiamen, were surrounded by a superior French force at Fort Necessity. He surrendered the fort under conditions of a pardon that allowed his men to keep their weapons for hunting purposed as they returned to Virginia. The surrender placed him in POW status. Later and to their regret, the Brits blundered badly when they refused to honor GW's petition for a commission in the British Army. This was at a time when the Brits and the Colonials were good buddies, allied against a common enemy ..... the French. The only other president to have been a POW was Andrew "Stone Wall" Jackson. Andy, at the ripe age of 13-years, joined a militia unit as a message runner to fight against the British. He was captured and thrown into prison where he contracted smallpox. At death's door, the camp commander, not wanting the child's blood on his hands, released him to his mother's care. Got knowledge ..... Share it.
