    It is 100% the job of any and every auctioneer to realize as high a hammer as possible (let me repeat and phrase it slightly differently: "as high a sale price as possible") for every lot they sell. This is the duty they have assumed on behalf of a consignor (which has the additional benefit of increasing the auction's percentage-linked fee). Also, if the auction venue has bought the item outright, it belongs to the auctioneer/auction house and again, the auctioneer's number one job is to get as much as possible for himself and/or "the house". So sure, auctioneers do love it when a couple of competing would-be "alphas" get in a pissing match for dominance when bidding. Don't blame the auctioneers or auction venues for insane prices dictated and driven solely by the whim of bidders who have (or act like they have) more money than sense.
