As far as princely states are concerned, the forgeries are pretty rare, unless it is a very very special coin. But so far I have not noticed anything like that here. The only thing is that you need to know which coin to buy. If you are not familiar with the coins, someone might trick you by giving a different coin for the scarce one you wanted.
Thanks, I see what you mean... I dont think I could distinguish most of them unless I am sitting these with a Krause or some other catalogue in my hand... something I will definately do next time I am there.
East India Company 1616 copper coin I, Prakash, edited posses one copper coin Half Anna issued by East India Comapny. In one side it is minted as "Easst India Company" - "Half Anna" the other side with Hanuman, Ram, Lakshman, Sita. edited - such offers are not permitted
Hello Prakash, I think the coin in question was discussed in detail about a week before in this forum. See the thread : http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=17856
Today, I discovered something. I've never seen a rarer variety of the 1864 fanam and had only the words of experts around here. And none of them seems to possess the rare coin. And one of them even asserted that there is no such a coin. But, today, I went to a remote place (by the side of a forest) where someone promised me to sell some of his old coins and to my utter astonishment, found a variety of 1864 coin which is not in the collection of anyone out here(ofcourse, I told him about its value and paid him accordingly). I've attached the pictures of 1864 variety here and I'm yet to announce this find to my fellow collectors around here. I'm not sure whether this coin is this much rare in the international market. But here, its definitely a dream coin. And I'm mighty happy today. Note the differences on both the sides. The second is the rare variety. And the dot that is missing is the one which is approximately in the middle of the common variety and not the two dots on the right hand and left hand side of the coin as indicated on the Krause. And I hope to come across the variety indicated by the Krause pretty soon.
Biju, did you find out any more information about that cupro-nickel pattern 1 Chuckram that you posted here one time? Aidan.
Here's some elusive coins from Travancore which I was fortunate to get. These coins are really hard to come by and command a good premium. The first one is a 1'2 chuckram from Bala Rama Varma (18th C), second is a Silver Anantaraya Fanam. Its not yet catalogued by Krause. Krause does have its golden counterpart in its catalogue. But these silver coins are much rarer. The third one is a 2 Chuckrams from Bala Rama Varma (18th C). There is one more non-catalogued variety for this coin. The fourth is the Quarter Pagoda (Quarter Thulabharam). [I'm waiting for the One Pagod to reach me from the U.S, thanx to Christian].. The fifth one is a Cash One. The One Cash variety is very common, but this one has become really rare. Evenif you got enough fund, you may not get these coins for collection as they've become quit a rarity.. And if you find any of these anywhere, grab it.. :thumb:
FOr all the noise you made about me not having a camera now i have to tell you the same go buy a camera
Biju, those are nice coins.I like the gold Talabharam Kasu coin.I've found out why your website isn't working. You'd better find a new host. Spock1k,I will be getting a digital camera, but it depends on my boss finding the instruction manual. Aidan.
I'd love to complete the collection.. Now I miss only 3 copper coins and the machine-struck gold coins. I'm going for the copper coins first as they are really hard to get and the gold coins are readily available if you've got enough funds.. :smile
Biju, you can report the unlisted Travancorean coin by sending an email with photos to Thomas Michael here; Tom.Michael@fwpubs.com .Who knows, they may put photos in Krause to illustrate the coinage,as the descriptions in Krause are very vague. Spock1k,as for completing my Travancorean coin collection,I am looking at an uphill struggle to find some coins, especially the silver & the gold. Aidan.
Biju, you are also right about some of the Travancorean copper coins. That website host mentioned earlier in this section is now back in business. Aidan.
Jerome,Travancore didn't have its own coins in the 1650's.Travancore's first coins were issued in around 1795. Aidan.
Aidan, that is not correct.. actually, the state of Travancore came to existence in 1750s and in 1795, it became a princely state. Prior to 1750s, almost all the areas of Travancore came under the independent kingdom of Venad. so, what Jerome having might be a Venad Chera coin.. These are hotly pursued after by collectors because of their complex designs and beauty. Jerome, if you can post a picture, that would be nice.. :thumb:
Aidan, Your right, I haven't been on for quite a while. Desktop 'puter giving me fit, so all I have is the laptop. Anywho, I just picked up this Travencore a couple of weeks ago, and after your reprimand , I thought I'd post the pics from the QX5...tiny little thing, and I have no idea of the date (mainly cuz there ain't one). Fred WINS# 616
hello Fred, thats a 1 cash coin from the 20th C. There are 2 varieties determined by the thickness.. The thicker on belongs to the period prior to 1928 and the thin variety belongs to 1928-49. Hope this helped.. :smile
