    Imagine Trajan's surprise when he's yanked out of Elysium and thrust into the Christian heaven. Apparently that's what must have happened according to a medieval tradition datable to the 8th c. Trajan's reputation for goodness was so strong that Pope Gregory the Great (590-604) wept tears for his salvation and received a revelation that Trajan had indeed been retroactively "baptized" by those tears.
