One question. This is my first raw coin. How do you guys keep your raw coins? What holders do you use? Any tips are welcomed.
Wow Sallent => that's a very sweet new addition!! (congrats) ... great Mars!! Sadly, I don't have a Trajan denarius (*sigh*)
Thanks. It wasn't cheap, but I honestly think it was worth every penny. Next month I'd love to add a Nerva in a really high grade and eventually try to put together a set of the Flavian and Good Emperors in as high a quality as possible, even if I have to pay quite a bit for particular high end and interesting examples. In the end it should all be worth it. Once I do that, I think I'll work on getting a few interesting Republican denarii, and eventually moving on to Greek and Middle Eastern coinage from antiquity. PS: once I receive the Republican denarii of M. Tullius that I purchased the other day, should I free it from its plastic holder? Yes or no?
I probably will then, but I'll have to make my way to a coin shop to get some of those PVC free holders and album pages. I found out (thanks to Google) that there is a coin shop on my way to work that sells ancient coins, so maybe I'll stop there this week to pick up the holders. I just hope they don't tempt me with any ancient coins.
By all means, go to the coin shop for no other reason than they have Ancient coins. I have no idea what a coin shop may sell the flips for, but you can find them on ebay along with the three ring binder pages at fair prices. I'll be watching to see what you might find at the shop.
=> I am such a slab-snob that I've even released my modern coins from their cases!! (and yah, I realize that's probably not too good for resale, but unlike some folks who enjoy displaying their coins that way, I find that slabs are hard to store and basically they just don't fit with the rest of my sweet "free" coins) However Sallent, Doug made a comment in your other thread: => he's usually pretty bright, so although I know that "I" would still release the coin, he may be correct that it might be worth more if kept in its prison? (it's obviously up to you, my new coin-friend)
I keep all mine in 2x2 SAFLIPs in a 2-row cardboard box(I think the brand is lighthouse). They are more rigid and fragile than some holders but I really like them and except for a massive Ptolemaic drachm they fit all my coins really well. Also, I'd de-slab the coin. If you're planning on selling it soon, then keep it slabbed, but if not, free it from the prison and enjoy it.
IMHO the very best you can do for housing your ancients (raw) coins is Abafil cases. Made in Italy, lots of different sizes, holding cases, etc. Not cheap but awesome. You will need more coins though you are off to a great start!
Cool cases ... they would fit nicely into my sweet big gun-safe!! Ummm, but I actually prefer PVC-free binders that keep the coins from rattling-around .... plus, more importantly, I can include coin-photos and pages of coin-facts associated with each of my coins (yah, I'm that guy => capital A, anal)
Fantastic ancient @Sallent, welcome to the world of ancient coin collecting! I use the Abafil cases as well to store my ancients, but they are pricey. Luckily I found several at a flea market (what a find!!)
