The real story is that they were hollowed out in the 19th century to house pictures of loved ones. I have seen Columbian commemorative half dollars that had been given the same treatment. This one has solder on the edge which means it was probably used for jewelry at one time. It was on "the Boston Bid Wall" in the early 1980s. No one bid on it so I ended up with it after the sale for $20.
