Was looking at trade dollars tonight and ran across this one. Has anyone seen gaps in the letters like this? At first I thought maybe this was a fake coin in a fake slab. Then I thought maybe somebody had removed the real one and put this in a real slab. I went to NGCs verification page and looked it up. The images they have after grading show this coin. It looked suspicious but they called it good and gave it an AU-53. Wondering what would cause this on mulitple letters?

Wear polish and debris. One almost looks cudlike probably from debris bilidup. The letters are thin anyway i could easily see junk or grease in that crevice

Wish I could say nice coin but can't see the whole coin. Wear polish is as good as it gets, along with other anomalies in my opinion. Thanks for sharing.

That's seen pretty often, I think it's more common on 1876 issues (?)
