I'm all for collecting what you like. These particular coins I would have collected and left raw -- I don't see what the PCGS or NGC slabs particularly add in this case.

I dont know how TPG's determine bag marks on heavily toned coins. I thought some of these would grade higher.

What's the NGC submission number so we can go to their site and look at the photos of the coins.

I presume it's just a streak in the toning, and not something that disrupts the coin's surface?

NGC disagrees...slabbed "Obverse Scratched" ...I would go with their opinion... in hand.

Why assume ngc had it right?

He pretty much said already, because NGC saw it in hand and he hasn't.

And based on your pics, I can't see much of anything.

Pcgs had it in hand and they didnt see a scratch.

TPG's are mostly for speculators, not purist collector types. Nothing wrong with being either but I prefer to be the latter.

Ehhh, not necessarily. PCGS has slabbed many coins that have scratches on them. The difference is, NGC thought the scratch was severe enough to matter and PCGS did not. But that doesn't mean it isn't there.

Hard to say from the photos, I couldn't find a scratch unless it's the horizontal line below the chin. On the others, the tone does seem a little over the top, with the exception of the 1885-O which I think for-sure belongs in an MS64 holder.

I strongly disagree. I buy coins but have no serious consideration to future value. If I did I would never buy coins because sooner or later counterfeits that can not be distinguished from real items will be a reality and crash the market.

I buy coins because I enjoy owning them. I will always try to get the best deal and so i am concerned what they are worth now.

I would never buy coins without pcgs and ngc. I don't have nor want to spend years of my life studying coins just so I'm educated enough to safely buy coins. Coins are a hobby and a pastime to me not career. I could never spend what I do on coins without the market liquidity and confidence that first rate tpg's offer. Yes they are a crutch and some of us need a crutch. At least with a tpg I know that the worst case scenario is going to be a point off or so. I don't have to worry about getting into an argument about if it is cleaned or not. I don't have to worry about someone selling me a counterfeit.
Honestly it limits my exposure to loss considerably.

I am only in the market and hobby because of the tpg. And because I and others like me are out there I'm not so sure about the accuracy of your statement.

My sentiments exactly! I've been collecting and studying coins long enough to have reasonable grading skills, and can usually spot obvious problem coins. However, I've spent enough time on forums like this one to understand that there is still an awful lot that I don't know, so why not rely on experts who grade coins for a living?
