PS @TIF : This could make a nice repeating design on fabric for something...

Carthago Does this look infected to you?

Nice coins Eric and great editing on that and your naval theme post.

I'd "guess" the R4 is the Vespasian denarius but I'm not at all sure. Your Octavian Graccus is certainly not common but not that rare either. Great portrait of Octavian btw! I'm an RR guy so my knowledge drops off fast outside of that.

@Carthago: if you look VERY closely at the Octavian in quadriga / Victory on prow, you will see that the legend on the obverse is "CAESAR DIVI F." There is only one known die from this series with that legend and image, and maybe a handful of coins outside of museums; all the rest say "IMP CAESAR" on them, and as you know, there are lots of those about. In any case, this coin type is THE "transitional" coin between Octavian's CAESAR DIVI F and IMP CAESAR series.

Of course, does anyone care about such things? I bought it from a CNG auction, where it was misidentified as a common IMP CAESAR type, for a pittance (relatively speaking, and based on Sears' valuation of the type); but it was in the Manhattan 4 sale, and no one bid on it. Just as well, actually...

Ah yes! At least I'm in good company overlooking that! I am aware of the type and the transitional theory behind it which is really cool. Great coin and cherry pick off of CNG. I have the common type in decidedly uncommon condition which obviously I mistook yours for.

Yeah, that's REALLY nice, and even better than the best one I used to own (but was sold in Manhattan 4... more's the pity). It was ex-Malter, ca. 1991; looks to be a shade lower grade than yours, which is the crispest I've seen (see below).

I have so much catching up to do after 6 days trying to view photos on a phone without eyeglasses (broke my 6th pair in a year.)

I'm glad everyone got behind this thread so enthusiastically. I'm lazy and this thread is eye candy for me........in a distilled form....like a fine brandy. Fortunately I am of drinking age.

I hope you will excuse me for falling behind a bit......I've been on island time.

  15. No idea how you guys narrowed your top down to 12. I don't have that much control; or i'm too indecisive. How about a top 12 large and top 12 small?

VERRY Niiiice. As a Roman Historian who works on Roman Republican political institutions, I particularly appreciate your Caepio and Saturninus denarii. I used to have one of each, but low grade, so as things like that usually go, I sold them... I will have to replace them some day.

That's not fair Michael. Two sets? Well......that's just fine by me.

Those are wonderful. I can see why you had trouble narrowing it down.

That 12 would be so much nicer if it were in my collection. I cant get over the heft of the Eucratides. What is that like 35 mm of ancient Greek phatness?

This is my favorite 12 at the moment (June 8th). it could change soon... I am not even sure that I will keep all of them in my collection. I do hope that I will be able to upgrade some of them in the future...
