I personally do not like tonig - yes I have a few toned cents. And I do admit some toning looks nice, but the dark toning detracts from a coin in my opinion. Monster toning can be seen on Anacodda rare coin. I think a few of them look nice but most of them I do not like.
Heres a cpl of my toners. Ebay pics, I'm still trying to get good pics thru slabs. Just bought a light setup and some stuff today, hopefully will work better.
The following link went a long way in removing the premium on toned coins and could answer just about any toning question one could imagine. http://forums.collectors.com/messag...upgraded to PCGS MS 69 - Must see to Believe![/quote] WOW !!!!!!!!! in a PCGS holder non the less
I recently went to my first real coin shop (how do you guys stand it) and purchased 12 uncirculated morgans. About half of these coins shows some light toning. I really like these coins. Not only does the dates show they are 100+ years old but with this toning, they look old/antique to me. Now this is very light toning and not some of the heavly toned coins that I have seen pictures of. I think I may have found my true calling in the morgans . Glad I live 100 miles away from this shop.
Also, if you did urine-tone a coin, do you think it would be better to saturate the urine with soda or coffee, or drink water to keep it pure?
One thing I learned from this thread is to stop buying those coins advertised on Ebay as "Naturally U-toned Morgans."
The last question was a joke. I am, however, still curious if submerging a coin in urine would tone it. The only problem is I'm not curious enough to test it myself. Real question though. Let's say, theoretically, the year was 1895 and you woke up from bed to use the chamber pot, and the morgan dollar you had sitting on the nightstand fell into the freshly used chamber pot. Before the next emptying, the coin became toned. Would this be considered natural toning in today's market?
Well urine is 97% or 98% water and the remaining 2 or 3 percent is the toxin (the yellow stuff). The water will evaporate living the toxin on the coin. The toxin in or bodies consist of salt and other things so in my opinion the coin would be ruined over a matter of time. Lou
