Of course it's environmental, it always has been and always will be. Metal tones - period. Even if you do everything there is to store the coin properly it is still going to tone - just at a slower rate. The only way there is to stop a coin, any coin, from toning is to prevent air from getting to the coin. That said, there are more variations on environmental conditions than you can count. And under the right environmental conditions a coin can and will tone very quickly. It doesn't always take decades. It can even happen in weeks or months. Some toning even ocurrs in days. But that is because there unlimited degrees of toning. Now as to coins toned in the Waite Raymond albums, or any album, being considered being considered as AT - what about the guys who bought those albums 50 years ago and had never heard of the albums toning their coins. In fact, years later when they discovered their coins had toned they were quite upset about it because they prefered their coins white. Is anybody gonna tell me that those coins are AT ? If you are, then please tell me specifically which coins are NT ? And don't try to tell me about the ones from rolls or mint bags either. Because there are people who intentionally place coins in paper rolls, mint bags, paper envelopes, certain plastic holders and everything else known to man - just to get their coins to tone. There are also those who did it completely unknowingly and the toning happened by accident. Anybody gonna tell me that they can tell which was which ? I say to you no, there is only one definitive distinction that separates AT from NT regardless of the methodology or causality - and that is intent. And rarely can intent ever be known for certain. And for that reason, if you can't tell - then does it matter ?
