You're unlikely to get an answer on "how" because it opens a huge can of worms. Perhaps you wish to do it for your own entertainment but others would love to capitalize on it to deceive others and make a profit. In order to know how, learning the chemistry of how toning happens in the first place is where to start.
even if, as he said in another thread, he has not intent to sell ever he isn’t immortal. Those coins will eventually be headed to someone else’s hands. Hence we pretty much all of us recoil and his question. There is the future to consider as well.
How about this, we really don't care what you would like. We are going to tell you not to do it, and nobody is ever going to share the "here's how" with you.
If you don't want to share, that's up to you. Please don't speak for 'everyone'. I'm not interested in deceiving anyone. I'm only interested in some 'fun'. And, I mostly want to do it on copper bullion 1 oz rounds -again, just for fun. But, having a rainbow collection of each coin would be fun. I understand that for some collectors, the hobby is only about dollar value or preserving the exact moment the coin entered their collection. But, for some of us, the hobby is about fun and joy. I have coins that are in my collection that I would never clean or touch. And, I'd like to have a small handful of coins that are 'lightly' touched up to look brighter and easier to read (again, un-valuable coins), and I'd like to have a little collection of fun looking coins/bullion.
Don't tell me who to speak for, you've been here a hot minute and you are interested in cleaning coins and artificially toning them. And you want us to believe that you are doing this for the "fun and joy"? You are an aspiring coin doctor and should be treated as such.
I'm not interested in arguing. I love collecting coins. I love the history. I also love having some fun along the way. I have a lot of different coins for different purposes. Clearly, you've taken it personally and feel the need to be rude because "internet". If I could delete this thread, I would. I'm not looking to stir up arguments in here, even though they are eventually unavoidable, especially when people feel as though their opinions matter more than others. If a moderator is able to close/lock/delete this thread, please do. It's not worth getting people riled up over.
I don't have an answer, I know there are chemicals that you can use, however. I left a common Franklin half on my windowsill for three years and it's darkened but not turned rainbow-colored. I know you can hit a clad coin with a torch to color it, not sure about silver, though.
The fact that you think I am being rude because it is the internet shows how very little you know about this subject. Do you think you are the first dude who rolled into this forum looking for advice on how to artificially tone coins to make a quick buck? And you can drop the "I am doing it for my enjoyment" routine, we have seen that excuse countless times. And if you had been the run of the mill guy asking, I may have ignored it, but then you went and posted this line... It was bad enough that you posted this in your original post, but when you got your first bit of resistance, you posted it again as if you were admonishing the person who tried to warn you. The balls that it takes to type that sentence, twice, is staggering. The proliferation of artificial toning techniques that can successfully mimic toning patterns and color schemes of natural toning threatens the stability of the entire rainbow toned coin market, but YOUR main concern is avoiding the "don't do it" chat. Furthermore, how did you know to type that sentence? Because this isn't the first time you have attempted this, is it? You have tried this before somewhere else and ran into the same resistance that you are encountering here, and thought you could bully your way past it since nobody knows who you are. You can pretend to be an innocent neophyte to avoid hostile reactions, I am not buying it. You have been here less than a week, and IMO, you reputation is destroyed.
And you think that those that have been in this hobby for many years are not in it for the fun and joy? Let me be the next person to be rude to you. You are the worst example of being a collector with no concern of what this hobby is all about. You have shown that you can not be trusted to be honest. People like you have done nothing but harm to the hobby. Now you come here asking how to be dishonest. I hope the mods leave this thread open to warn others about you.
Try this with the copper rounds. Take a professional blowtorch (not the little hobby torches) and put the point of the blue part of the flame just touching the middle of the round holding it there for at least 30 seconds and you should turn it into a really unique copper round. Make sure to wear eye protection. PS Whenever you ask questions on a chat forum, beware of bad info.
I'm not interested in making "a quick buck" or any "buck". I don't sell my coins. And, if I did, I would never sell anything fake pretending to be something else - even if others do that. Not everyone is the same. You don't know me and it's ridiculous to act like you do. I don't have to have "done this before" to recognize that some people would be "sensitive" or say "don't do it". I'm not interested in any "market". I'm only interested in my own personal entertainment and experimentation. Believe it or not, sometimes people do things just for themselves and no one else. If you don't believe that, that's on you- you don't need to get involved. You're not a super hero or a police detective. You're just a guy on the internet.
Wrong, I am a long standing contributing member of this forum for over 15 years, and you don't get to tell me what concerns me. People like you are a cancer to this hobby, and I will be here to let everyone know that you are a wolf in sheep's clothing.
All right, let’s tone down the rhetoric and put down the knives and pitchforks, please. Our author here now knows he has touched upon a very sore spot and opened a very big can of worms. It is a very controversial topic. The thread stands, for now. I have left it unlocked and not removed it. If you do decide to continue the conversation, please do so in a civilized manner, without starting a flame war. (This is addressed to everyone here.) If this advice is ignored, we mods will take whatever actions we deem necessary.
