I pulled this nickel out of a completed set a few years ago. I noticed on the reverse there was a strand of hair imbedded in the toning on the reverse. It’s interesting the toning this caused around the strand that sat there on the surface for several years or decades. Thought it was cool enough to share. Before hair removed. After hair removed.
Ok that is cool, but also very disgusting. I can imagine an old cruddy dude with long hippy hair and a beard in the 80's touching that coin and rummaging in his beard to find the right hair to go on. Still cool though!
Powerful shampoo, or grease from a filthy scalp?! You have a fifty-fifty chance to repeat the process if you want!
I'm guessing you weren't around in 1980. MUCH more likely to be a hairspray issue. All hair does contain sulfur, though, and it wouldn't surprise me if even clean hair caused toning over the course of 40 years.
that is pretty cool! oily hair and maybe a chain smoker too ?? Etsy ad: 1980 Jefferson nickel toned by a rare coin worm, very rare, only $1100, free shipping
