Nobody's totally hit it yet a lot of 3/5 some are very close. I'll let this one ride to tomorrow night
I don't see anything less than high 64, or 64 star. They are all gems or near gems to me, in addition to the incredible toning. I love the toning on all of them, including the last one. The " struck in grease" was gratuitous, as it is a decent strike with rainbow toning. Any and all could be gem-- high grade coins. These are what quality toned coins are all about. I have sold ones that look like those for $300-600, recently, and in the past.
What do you mean by that? Are you saying my assessment is wrong? (Post#19)Or that it doesn't affect grade? Or something else? I actually think it adds to that one, Morgan errors are hot right now!!!
I am saying your assessment is wrong. That is a typical light strike, with rainbow toning. I know Morgan errors are hot.
Typical? TYPICAL??......Show me another P mint Morgan with the same shallow O,D,W...talons, olive leaves, olive branches, arrow feathers, arrow shaft ,upper tail feathers and I might agree with you.... I'll be waiting.... For those of you who aren't in-the-know, grease most typically gets trapped in the recessed parts of the die, and, usually towards the middle of the coin....
Well here you go I agree with most of the grades but I think the 84-o is a 63 with a point bump for eye appeal. And the 89 is technically a 66 but doesn't have enough luster
Drats! Off by 2... BUT... I mentally changes my guess on the last one to 65 so I'm counting it as only 1 off but thats by only 1 grade (and that's the 84o with the huge gash I had at 63 which at 64 I'm thinking it got the 64 bump for color)... so I'm counting this as a total win
That is a New Orleans strike--I guess you haven't seen that many of them. I reiterate, typical weak strike. I've seen even weaker breast feathers in a MS 64 or 65 O coin.
I just got this one today, as part of project upgrade/ project wedding present. Notice that it is an average, not super strong New Orleans strike, but I liked the coin's eye appeal:
You were good. The first 84-o is a 63 in my opinion why it didn't cac. Got a color bump to 64 and a star the second the mark is far worse in pics then in hand. My opinion 64 the right grade
Seems I was a bit harsher than the TPG's. I like the toning on all but the last one (1889). That one is just not my cup of tea. Overall, the toning will sell these coins, IMO. Yeah, it's nice some have 65/66 grades, which is a plus, but toning makes these coins what they are. Do you plan to keep them? The two 84-O's are my favorites. I like the toning on the PCGS coin slightly better than the NGC, but they're both very nice. My third fav is the 1880 S. Thanks for starting the thread and sharing these beautiful coins.
Toning wise, I love both 84o coins the most, irrespective of grade. I think they are both beautiful, and would sell for monster prices. Same goes for the 80s MS 66. Buyers love high grade toners-- I think that could sell for 5-6 times greysheet retail, or more.
When did New Orleans Morgans become the topic of discussion?? I wasn't referring to breast feathers either, you made my point for me, the breast feathers are fine. It was all those other areas of the reverse I mentioned that were weak, I even circled said areas and asked 4 u to show me just one coin like it. Re-read post #31 and then read it again,.... I say the die was grease filled during the striking of that coin, if you disagree that's ok.
