Token

  1. Morning,

I came across this quirky little token which I'm guessing is from a cinema perhaps. Looks like a projector? or a lamp? Photos are below was wondering if any of you have seen anything similar? I'm sure it's worthless but still curious what it is.

    Thanks in advance

The word Déposé is French for Registered.
The denomination 2 D suggests it is a British token with a value of Two Pence

I would say British is probably a good bet but probably not a cinema. Even older. A popular form of Victorian entertainment were "Magic Lantern" shows. Moving pictures hadn't come along yet but they would have something similar to a movie theater but the projector displayed individual images from large glass slides up on the screen, often with a narrator to talk about the scene being shown. It was basically a slide show for large audiences. The image of the lantern makes me think it was more likely for a magic lantern show theater than a cinema.

There is one for sale on eBay.uk.

The sellers are not coin dealers and often get descriptions wrong.

    They describe it as

Vintage c1910-1930s FRANCIS CARTAUX French Brass Machine Token
