So people didn't find out about things for years, sometimes many years. Before the internet they either had to read it in a magazine, a book, or hear it from somebody face to face. And just like today, just because somebody says something, few people ever believe it. They will swear with their dying breath that it isn't so because they haven't seen it or experienced it themselves.
