@Al Kowsky In Robert Levinson's book "The Early Dated Coins of Europe
1234-1500" 2nd ed. it is listed as a goldgulden. It is very similar in weight.

Some of my favorite German coins would also be notgeld and Duren stands out as issuing outstanding examples...iron coins. :)

This is one of my favorite coins. My grandfather was in royal bodyguard regiment called the Black Hussain in 1913. The coin commemorates the defeat of Napoleon in 1813 and I found a well worn, pocket piece version of this coin in a pawn shop silver junk box in 2013. On the 100 year anniversary. I had no idea of it's existence before then.

I like to imagine that my grandfather had it as his pocket piece when it was new. He died before I was born, so I'll never know.

I travelled to Berlin in 1982 by rail. The difference between East and West was stark, kind of like going from black and white to color as in the Wizard of Oz. I didn't collect any coins, but East German citizens would give several times the "official" exchange rate for US dollars.

Sweet! I too have an emotional attachment to this type, and the specific coin seen below. My mother gave it to me in about 1978; she got it from my great grandfather - her father's father. All of them were born and lived (or live, as in the case of my mum) in Germany, in the Mannheim and Zweibrucken areas. My Ur-opa (great-grandfather) got it mounted for a necklace. Despite that, I have immense attachment to the coin.

    Have a terrific day!

Frederick III, also called (until 1888) Crown Prince Frederick William, born October 18, 1831, Potsdam, Prussia—died June 15, 1888, Potsdam, king of Prussia and German emperor, known as the 99-days emperor, because he was emperor for 99 days in 1888. During this time, he was a voiceless invalid, dying of throat cancer. Although influenced by liberal, constitutional, and middle-class ideas, he retained a strong sense of the Hohenzollern royal and imperial dignity.
