I said « imp. cleaned » without being specific, but yes, according to your photos and descriptions it was overdipped… which is not as bad as surface hairlines, however the original mint luster is gone.

You are right about that. But I have seen so many coins that are toned to the point of ugliness, and yet......people bid on them like crazy. I know, I know, that doesn't make the coins like that high graders. I don't find them attractive anyway unless they have brilliant luster with a bit of rim or rainbow toning. The dark ones I usually stay away from. I just wanted that year and mint. Patience is NOT one of my virtues.

Toning can severely impact the grade to the naked eye, as there are some coins I've seen where the toning is such that it looks more like corrosion. It's an ICG MS67 quarter, and an inexperienced grader would probably say it's a low-end MS. I personally love toned coins, especially ones with blue toning on them. Take a MS62 1921 Morgan with blue toning and I'd buy it.

Not sure I understand. What would an experienced grader say? Nevermind, I reread what you said. It makes sense now. Thanks!
