No star, and I don’t know why, something about that coin is just hinky!

Why on earth did that not get a star unless it was graded before they started giving them. I say it definitely should have

By the time that generation of NGC holder was released, the star was already being used.

If it wasn't for the rim ding on the obverse at 6 and the slight rubs on the high points, I think this could star, just to many distractions.

While those factors should play a role in the grade, I doubt they would when determining a star. With the rim in particular, it seems like it’s almost ignored unless the hit is very large (even when grading coins).

I understand it's just that they immediately caught my eye. I could ignore the rim ding, if the high points were equally toned as the field. They are a distraction and therefore hinder the eye appeal for me.

Can you further explain which high points appear unequally toned? Parts of the hair?

I just looked at the Instagram video. Doesn't seem to be what I thought. The TV's look as if the coin has rubs on the high points above liberty, ear bun hair curls etc.
As if the toning was rubbed off. MY bad.

She's a funky looking one, this 1881. I like it! Give it a star.

This last one ended up being much closer than I anticipated as we had a tie. Just like with the last round, the person posting it had to break the tie (I voted yes on star). I liked the green and think the color is strong enough to merit a star. It looks like not everyone likes it, but that is what makes things more interesting. :)

I find this thread interesting as to what others define as star worthy. As I said earlier, toning to me is in the eye of the beholder so preference is very subjective. I try to look at this more objectively but have to admit there are exceptions if I see a coin that catches my eye; again very subjective.

I think it's basically impossible to go into it objectively when eye appeal is a determining factor. There will always be at least some tendency to react based on one's own taste. This is part of what gives us inconsistency with stars (at least for toning).

Honestly, this is how I've always approached the Star.

However, after a discussion with Mark Salzberg a couple of weeks ago at FUN, my perspective has changed.

The Star is not, and has never been, about what *I* consider eye appealing. Or what *you* consider eye appealing.

The Star has *always* been about what Mark Salzberg considers eye appealing - and that is literally the only criteria there is. If your eye is close to his, you'll be more aligned to the star. There are some that we can all agree on, and there are some we can all disagree on. However, the Star is all about what Mark Salzberg likes. And that's it, like it or not. (I'm not saying I've figured out what Mark likes and what will star, but his explanation of his philosophy about the Star has helped me understand quite a bit more).

This is *very* similar to the whole CAC debate about John Albanese - the green bean is awarded if John likes it, if he doesn't like it then no bean for you.

In the end it should be what the buyer likes, regardless the grade or whether it has a star. Unfortunately, for those building registry sets, a coin that Mark Salzberg likes will be worth more points; an ugly, higher graded coin will be worth more to a person building a registry set than a "prettier" lower graded example. Even the grade on a TPG slab can be argued; your GTG threads are an example here on CT.

Over time, another respected numismatist may put their own stamp of approval on a slab, making it more valuable to other collectors; where will this all end.
