I try to "buy the coin, not the holder"; or a bean. I have to admit, I do like the look of coins in a PCGS holder over an NGC one.
I had been on a tear to get rid of all ngc bc of how the Pcgs inventory app / link to CF (registry app recaps everything and easy to use) but realized the foolishness of that. I like the way the ngc holders stack plus the look especially MS69 / MS70 bullion material in them. It appears NGC more of a leader in world coins and pricing of world gold (their world gold price guide). Currently NGC / Pmg has 257 k vs PCGS 198 k items on ebay. For some reason I can’t explain believe the white background of the NGC holder makes the coin look brighter, more appealing. Because of deals offered at shows, collections, estates, online opportunities I would go broke trying have everything in one TPG holder. I tend to buy the coin not the holder. As far as beaned material the price has to be right (and the coin definitely PQ) in relation to what I feel can sell it for. If I can’t buy it right pass.
Each have their own preferences. You can't see why someone would like PCGS slab. I can't see why anyone would want a modern bullion coin in a slab at all. lol It's like the Buffalo Gold...I can't see why anyone would slab that instead of keeping it in that beautiful wooden box in originally comes in. Baffles me, frankly. Whatever the case, to each their own Who's next for the CAC game? jom
That is a mighty nice coin. It has to have a green bean. If it doesn't I would be shocked. I cannot tell if its actually a slider and would get a gold or not.
I have been collecting for over 40 years and while I believe in the grades given by NGC and PCGS in some cases may questionable as to the quantity and timing, I do believe in the actual grades themselves. I am not sure how CAC is helpful or even a compliment to a grade as the coin has already been graded so, you are paying for a another company to verify the grade that a "grading' company gave to a coin? Aside from being redundant and unnecessary, what exactly is CAC doing besides scalping more money from a coin & collector? To that point, some believe this so-called CAC sticker raises the value of the coin which again, I find very peculiar as the grade already did this and an additional vote means nothing. So, you people can pay additional funds to verify a coin grade with a sticker that is already done with the original grading but, I see not added value. I will not pay more for a sticker to verify what was done prior. Sorry.
It seems everyone has answered so.... I did not submit this one but bought with the sticker. When I received the coin I was a bit "disturbed" but the hairlines on the obverse. I looked but could not tell whether the lines were from a wipe or whether it was die polishing. Usually the die polishing is in the fields but here it goes through liberty as well. But if it was cleaned then why the sticker? Either way, it's not a look that I care for so I sent the coin back. That's just me though....some others seem to like it. jom
I saw the lines and assumed it was die polish as that would seem too obvious to be missed if it was a sign of cleaning. I liked the color and am neutral on the lines (based on the photo). I know some like die polish lines but I can also see it being distracting.

I have made good money on CAC Commems bought at auction in grades 65-66 and then marked up and flipped in online store. One sold within a week easily getting A good markup. Show customers more picky, or possibly less pocket. However some CAC coins lingered in inventory for awhile. The coins which moved the quickest were obviously PQ with super luster no problems. One had light gold enhancing toning. As far as the coins still lingering pushed them out at less above bid to move them. Many of these CAC coins had average luster but acquired cheap slightly below bid not A coins like PQ above. Some sell well some don’t. The project was successful as the PQ getting higher markup floated the boat so to speak. So A coins will get better markup but B lower Markup or fail break even. Sort of like some opening 2 card hands in Texas Holdem more likely sure winners / good for all in. However that’s scary the 1832 10c had hairline appearing surfaces. I don’t think would sell well on the bourse and you most likely made a good decision in returning it. For big ticket coins like that I need to see them sight seen on the bourse bc photo no matter how good is not always a good indicator. The sheet does not give a CAC bid on material under MS63. The CAC bid premium starts shootIng up for grades 66 and 67. One needs to have an understanding of the pricing system plus know how grade and look at coins make money on these. A bad decision on a big ticket coin will swamp your boat. Experienced players will not pay the money for average quality or less. Many collectors really don’t know how look at / grade and price coins so they are beaten from the opening kickoff sticker or not in this smash mouth south of steady market.
