I am sure most of you are tired of me posting coins of South East Asia. Reeling in my multitude of defeats in the most recent Steve Album auction, I went on the hunt, scouring the 'bay like the large predatory bottom feeder I am. Boy, did I find what I was looking for. Rather beat, scrubbed, battered and generally abused I found an uber rare coin. A coin unlike any other coin of South East Asia. Shape, size and fabric similar to the old Aegina Staters. This coin is rare among even the rares of Burma. I represents the minority coinage of the lesser cities, virtually is nothing is known about the mint locations, and such coins have never been found in quantity. These coins are found through out the Lower Menam Valley and are given a very early date, akin to the earliest Rising Sun coinages and the Pegu Conch. This coin's obverse features the Dharmachakra- the (in this case) 12 spoke wheel of Buddhist law. The reverse that Srivatsa temple we have all come to know, love and appreciate. Unlike most of the large diameter majestic coins of the region this coin is extremely compact (almost globular) and carries a fine heavy weight. (the only thing that mattered in those days.) Burma, Uncertain mint Mon Culture (AD 300-550) AR Full Unit (96 Ratti) 19 mm x 10.28 grams Obverse: 12 spoke Dharmachakra Reverse: Srivatsa - crescent moon within- no ancillary symbols. Ref: MNISWC No.2584 Note: Extremely Rare.
