I noticed that also. Just a day or two ago I was reading up on the subject and learned that the correct term is "doubled die". Anyhow, new collector. Go for what interests you. Years ago I sold or gave away a lot of coins. Now I sure wish I had kept them, so that is something to keep in mind. My so called "collection" is all over the place and has a lot of junk as opposed to a few gems. I still like and enjoy it a lot and it gives me plenty of pleasant hours of time spent organizing, photographing and sorting. The history aspect is a big part of this hobby as well. I am currently acquiring zinc war time coins from many countries, both WWI and WWII. The various games and contests on this forum are a great way to share pix of your coins and also to learn from the other collectors.
In addition to all the great suggestions stated above, I encourage you to find a local coin club to join. Each member will be only too glad to tell you why they started collecting what they do. Most clubs/members also will help start you off on your collecting journey by giving you coins to start a collection. Also, some clubs have lending libraries with books specific to many aspects of collecting and history.
Buy a good loupe to inspect your coins, I use the Bausch & Lomb Hastings Triplet 7X Magnifier. The clarity is awesome and it will help you find errors and to grade coins.
