I noticed that it looks like there is a tilted “I” in Liberty. I found this when looking through my coins. Was wondering if it’s a mint error or damage. Any input is appreciated. 1D9C264A-EFC5-4910-A557-F92593BCA7E3.jpeg 9A3647E8-F4FD-41C2-8B42-631528145349.jpeg 5E58946E-C9E1-4E19-8844-8E2C73E66859.jpeg

Danomite What do you say uh-huh

It’s damage. PMD, it took a hit sometime during it’s life.

Copper is relatively soft. The coins are a relief and after striking, small pieces of copper stand up and form the letters and numbers (and larger pieces the bust etc.).
When something strikes the coin, accidentally or on purpose, another coin, or something firm and most likely metal, the small piece of raised copper will move.
So you get an I in LIBERTY that is slanted because something struck it hard enough to move it slightly.

@GH#75 The I is damaged as said above. The mint mark placement can be in any number of positions, as they were hand punched into the dies. So, not an error.

You can actually see where the “I” was moved from...

PMD, NAV. Post Mint Damage, as stated above, and No Added Value but I love keeping these as examples.
