An old acquisition, but a special one for me and my niche of Byzantine Italian coins. The vast majority of Byzantine Italian coins that are available for me on a budget are usually the little penta- and decanummi, but I'm glad to say I've acquired one of the (relatively) larger half-folles. I have another of this type but smaller and in much poorer condition. This one is of the emperor Tiberius II Constantine, and is from Rome mint. Italy during the Early Middle Ages was an economic backwater and so the need for coinage wasn't so great, causing Byzantine issues from there to be scarcer/rarer than from other regions in the empire. There is a small theory that this half-follis type was actually produced by a military mint in Italy or in the vicinity of Rome (my guess is by a Byzantine army fighting the Lombards), but there is so little about this online that, until I find more concrete evidence on this, I will continue to regard this one as being made by the mint in Rome.

A great portrait on that coin.

I really know nothing about this period and its coins.

What other emperors from this period interest you?

Very nice! It's nice to have a coin from the provinces recovered by the Roman Empire after their collapse. :)

    Thanks for the additional comments.
Justinian since he got close to reestablishing the full Roman Empire. Maurice Tiberius because he was the last emperor to care about maintaining the Danube defenses and keeping the barbarians out. And Heraclius for staging a huge and decisive comeback for the Eastern Roman Empire against Persia (although things went south for good when the Muslims invaded).
