I have a dealer friend who for years dix nis best to build a set of MS 3 cent nickels.
Numerous times he has told me the same story....he's quite old ,anyway he placed a cheap ad in coin world for an 1885 ms coin.... he continued to run the add and accept coins from people who answered his ad.......and for 4 years he returned every coin...as they were proofs not ms coins he received.
Yes I like the series myself but.... they are fun to collect for variety, cuds, die cracks,etc....as far as building a set of ms coins Im at impossible.
And the nickel 3 cent series isn't the only series where you hit a wall and unless you have unlimited funds and time you may as well forget it. I enjoy the specimens I have and never worrie about chasing my tail trying to catch it.

I have a 1868 MS63 in an AU58 ICG holder. Only UNDERgraded coin I have seen in an ICG holder. Not worth reholdering, but sure gets dealers' attention at coin shows when I put it in my case.

I don't see it. I see either MDD or the remains of Longacre doubling.

Then you need to look up the variety either in the cpg or on line. It isn't Longacre doubling it is a triple punched ddo. As this is spot on for the variety triple punched RICA en,arge the image you can count the punches.
This is why when dealing with nickel 3 cent pieces as well IHC one must be aware of the difference, as on both series there's ddo's that occur and are often over looked as Longacer doubling.

I hate to hijack the thread, but there’s another coin type that existed around the time of the early 3CNs that is just as full of die cracks, cuds, MPDs, etc., and that is the copper-nickel IHCs.

Here’s what I believe is an 1863 CUD-031, or at least an early die state before it became a cud. Notice the die cracks on the right side of the reverse. There are over 40 different cuds known for 1863 alone.

There doesn’t seem to be anything too special on the obverse.
