Never seen this before that I remember.
I suspect it lay in a pool of blue ink then the owner tried to wash it off, but didn't succeed completely?

No offense meant but the toning is difficult to see due to all the black stuff. I agree with blue ink.

I see no reason it would not get a straight grade. It's not damaged or altered, other than the color. If possible, I would pass and find another coin.

This looks like dreck, not toning. I'd pass! ~ Chris

Pictures can be deceptive. In hand it may be a perfectly acceptable coin. Then maybe not.

    Blue ink? What the heck?

That is perfectly natural and attractive toning. Blues like that are uncommon, but can be quite attractive. If you like it, I think this is a nice coin.

I agree, the blue is not ink. This one sat a while in a cabinet of an old folder.
    100% original toning.

Me? I don't really like splotchy toning.
You? I'm fine if you like it. Every Morgan needs a good home and an appreciative owner.

I don't really think the market would think the toning is worth a premium, but I could be wrong. What do you think?

Not attractive at all. In fact, I think the obverse is in the process of getting terminal toning. Yeah, it would straight grade, but for what purpose?

I called it toning as I was at a loss for words as far as describing it.

Huh. Big jump from 58 to 60 for that date/mint. What is the grade on the slab?

@Robert Ransom , the blue here is not ink. Stop saying its ink. This is natural toning, not ink. What made you think it's ink?

If you like it, then it's nice toning. I'm sort of indifferent to it. It's not what everyone seeks in a Morgan dollar, but it is natural.

Ah! Blew it again. I meant to add a ;), but now that you mention toning which is blue or bluish, how about a few examples? :)
